The 28th June saw the final of the youth climbing series take place at EICA, Ratho for the second year running. This is the biggest climbing competition in the country with 180 competitors from 10 different regions all battling it out for the 2008 8-10 yrs, 11-13 yrs, 14-16yrs and team trophies. The standard of climber at this year’s event was extremely high! Each of the competitors on the day had already beaten off strong competition from over 600 climbers in the regional qualifying rounds just to be able to represent their region on the day. Some phenomenal displays of climbing resulted in many of the categories requiring additional super final routes to separate the top placed climbers.
The EICA, Ratho kids that make up the large percentage of the Scotland South region built on 2007’s hugely successful results. This year saw 3 of our kids (Jaime Davidson, Angus Davidson and Eleanor Hopkins) all climb superbly to claim 1st placed finishes in their age categories. There were also exceptional performances from Rachel Tennent, Jessica McCaskey, Jonathan Field, Ross Kirkland and Paul Williamson – who all achieved top 10 finishes. These impressive placings coupled with a huge rise in standards across the board from the other young climbers that represented Scotland South resulted in our local kids achieving the highest placed finnish (2nd) Scotland South have ever achieved in the competition’s history.
As head coach for the region I can truly say that this is the most talented and determined bunch of climbers our region has ever had. The level of commitment I have witnessed from these young climbers with regards to preparing for the comp is admirable. This coupled with the fact that they all display a huge appetite for anything climbing related, both indoors and out, suggests that this young generation of climbers coming through are going to go on to great things over the next few years.
