Scottish climbers reach for the top

The EICA (Edinburgh International Climbing Arena) on the outskirts of Edinburgh, this weekend, 6th – 7th December 2008, hosted one of the highest ranking climbing competition in the UK, The British Team Trials 2008. Today, 12 out of 16 Scottish kids competing qualified for the British Team which will see them competing in the European Youth Series 2009 and the World Youth Championships 2010, which are both being held at the EICA.

All nine youth competition climbers, who are part of the EICA:Ratho coaching program and train at Edinburgh every week achieved a place on the national squad. Neil McGeachy, EICA instructor, said: “The British Team Trials are huge for these contenders as it has lead to them representing their country in an international competition at their local climbing wall. The kids didn’t half rise to the occasion this weekend and everyone in the final climbed brilliantly.”

Rob Adie, of the British Mountaineering Council said: “The new competition walls at EICA allow us to test potential British Team Members to their absolute limit on the style of climbing route they will experience in an International event, it also allows the competitors to get a feel for what it will be like to compete in the arena in the European Youth Series and World Youth Championships in the upcoming years. It has been an intense weekend of competition climbing!’

EICA:Ratho hosted the trials, an event involving up to 100 climbers from age 12 and over, on two new competition climbing walls that have been opened; an18m and 15m high wall.
